Employees don’t have passwords to log into the system, unless they are also “users”, which a slightly different concept.

Does your system send emails? Did you configure a system outbound email account in Admin /Outbound Email settings?
You can try for example assigning a record to a user and see if that user receives an email notifying him. If not, then focus on email set up.
